Wegmans Breaking Ground Soon near Alexandria!

Wegmans  was delivered to my mailbox Thursday.

Not the store, yet, but an invitation to the long-awaited groundbreaking for the Wegmans at Hilltop Village Center in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County.Weingarten Realty Investors, the Houston-based investment trust that purchased the 33-acre shopping center site last fall for $13.6 million, will host the scheduled April 2 event.

“Hallelujah,” I imagine Alexandria-area residents are saying (because I’m an Alexandria resident and I’m saying it). The Wegmans is a well-known top priority for Lee District neighbors. That, and Vornado’s   redevelopment of the Springfield Mall, which may kick off as soon as this summer.

Site work started some time ago at the future Hilltop Village Center, which is near the Telegraph Road and Beulah Street intersection. But the anchor of the mixed-use project, the end-all-be-all of supermarkets, remained something of an unknown. Wegmans builds its owns stores at its own pace. The Wegmans website continues to say “TBD” for the Alexandria location.
